What is a massage therapist?

A massage therapist is a healthcare professional who performs systematic manual manipulation of soft tissue structures including muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and connective tissues to promote therapeutic healing, pain relief, and musculoskeletal wellness. Massage

Therapy practitioners apply scientific knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to assess client conditions and implement targeted treatment protocols using specialised techniques such as effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, and vibration.

The profession encompasses diverse specializations including remedial massage, sports therapy, trigger point release, myofascial mobilization, lymphatic drainage, and prenatal massage.

Practitioners utilise evidence-based techniques to address conditions ranging from chronic musculoskeletal dysfunction and sports injuries to stress-related disorders and postural imbalances.

What are the qualifications for a massage therapist in Australia?

Professional massage therapists undergo extensive education requiring completion of approximately 80–200 hours completed over 8–18 months, typically pursuing a Certificate IV in Massage Therapy or Diploma of Remedial Massage through registered training organizations. Their comprehensive curriculum encompasses musculoskeletal anatomy, neurophysiology, contraindications assessment, therapeutic modalities, clinical reasoning, and professional ethics.

Practitioners must demonstrate competency through supervised clinical practice, treating minimum 40 patients under professional supervision while maintaining detailed treatment records and informed consent protocols.

What are the main benefits of massage?

Massage provides effective relief from muscular tension and pain, improves circulation and flexibility, accelerates recovery from injuries, reduces stress levels, and enhances overall wellbeing.

Massage therapy reduces muscle soreness, alleviates stiffness, and addresses chronic pain by targeting soft tissues and promoting blood flow. It supports injury prevention and speeds rehabilitation for athletes and active individuals.

Regular massage relieves stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels, aiding relaxation and mental clarity. Additional benefits include enhanced joint mobility, improved sleep quality, support for the immune system.

Treatment outcomes include enhanced circulation, reduced inflammation, improved joint mobility, accelerated tissue repair, cortisol reduction, and endorphin elevation.

What types of massage do you offer and what should I expect during the session?

What to know about massage

Is massage covered by private health in australia?

The only massage covered by private health in Australia is Remedial Massage and Myotherapy. Swedish massage, aromatherapy massage, a Cert IV level qualification, hot stone massage, Tuina and Thai massage are not covered by private health in Australia.

How do i know if massage is appropriate for my condition?

Massage may be beneficial for stiff muscles and joints. It has also been shown to be helpful in recovery of injuries and post operatively.

Massage is also excellent for general maintenance of the musculoskeletal, integumentary systems. It’s not advised to received massage where there is inflammation, broken bones, severe skin abrasions, sunburn, specific heart conditions, recent impacts/traumas.

Is massage painful or uncomfortable?

If you have not had a massage for over 6 months, you may feel a bit painful for the next day or two. If your body is not used to massage, it may initially feel a bit sore. However, once you become used to receiving a massage treatment, it’ll feel less painful. More pain does not mean more gain.

How often should i get a massage for best results?

Initially you may need a few treatments in succession, thereafter once a month is recommended. If we’re working on a specific issue, once a week may be required until we can drop it back.

What should i do before a massage appointment?

Make sure you are clean. Try to not use body lotions before you massage as they may not blend too well with the oil. Avoid coming for a massage straight from the gym or directly after exercise when you’re still perspiring. Perspiration and oil don’t mix well.

What should I do after my massage appointment?

Avoid going straight to direct sunlight. The residue oil will be on your skin and the sun could easily burn you. A shower is a recommended and some light stretching and gentle exercise are good. Avoid rigorous exercise. Drink a lot of good quality water.

Massage vs Myotherapy: What is the difference?

Myotherapists typically undergo more extensive education and clinical training than massage therapists, learning advanced assessment techniques and treatment interventions. Massage therapy is a generic term as there are many forms of massage therapy from all over the world. It is embedded in some cultures such as Thailand for 2500 years.

In Australia, Remedial Massage is the most widely recognized and accepted modality. However there are a number of massage parlours around often displaying signs with lights.

Massage vs relaxation massage: what is the difference?

Relaxation massage is when massage used specifically  to induce a deep sense of relaxation. Massage therapy can be good for relaxation massage too.

What should I expect from my massage session?

If you’re going to some regular massage place at a mall or random shop, don’t expect to see a therapist with much in line of qualifications or knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology etc. Chances are they won’t even do a consultation. You could well end up with a pain merchant with little to no training. Expect an average treatment at best from your local parlour. Expect a lot more of a professional service when you see a myotherapist or remedial therapist.
